  Foundation Program  

Foundation Programme Guidelines 2011/2010

1 - All newly admitted students sit for the English Language Placement Test. Students are streamed into levels according to their test result.

Those students who fall under the following categories are exempted from the Placement Test:

  - Acquiring 470, or above, score on TOEFL (Paper-based Test).

  - Acquiring 5.5, or above, score on IELTS.

  - Having had a Foundation Programme at an academic institution inside or

  - outside the Sultanate of Oman.

2 -  Students who wish to be exempted must fill in the Application for Exemption from English Language Placement Test and        / or Foundation Programmes form found at the Admissions & Registrations office Submit authenticated, attested, and      original copies of all required documents (e.g., transcripts, certificates, and etc.) from their previous academic institution.

3 - Students are classified according to their result in the English Language. Placement Test as follows:

    - Students scoring 80% or above are admitted, straightaway, to their chosen academic programme.

    - Students scoring 70% - 79% are admitted to Level Three(L3) of the Foundation Programme.

    - Students scoring 55% - 69% are admitted to Level Two(L2) of the Foundation Programme.

    - Students scoring less than 30% are admitted to Level One(L1) of the Foundation Programme. Those students are, also, required to take 0101026  Starting Skills in English course: 4 Credit Hours per week (4 C.H. per Wk.). This course does not follow the test & evaluation guidelines applied by other Foundation Programme courses.


Foundation Prgramme L1 courses are as follows

The final minimum Pass Score is 50% for each Level. The minimum Pass Score is calculated as follows: Semester Final examination (on all Level courses) result percentage + all Semester Coursework percentage = Semester Final Pass Score percentage for each Level

The following points explain the Foundation Programme policy on classifying and streaming students into different programmes, according to their Semester Total Final result:

1 - Students scoring 50% or above on their Semester Total Final result are given a Pass mark against each course taken as part of their assigned Level programme.

2 - Students scoring less than 50% on their Semester Total Final result are given a Fail mark against each course taken as part of their assigned level programme. Those students are required to repeat all Level courses in the following semester.

3 - Students scoring 85% or above on their L1 Semester Total Final result are exempted from L2 Foundation Programme. Those students are required to take L3. They are, also, required to take course 0303100 Basic Mathematics.

4 - Students scoring 80% or above on their L2 Semester Final result are Admitted, straightaway, to their chosen academic programme.

5 - Students scoring 50% - 79% on their L2 Semester Total Final result are required to take all L3 Foundation Programme courses.

6 - L2 students take English Language and are, also, required to take course 0303100 Basic Mathematics (3 C.H. per Wk.) as part of the Foundation Programme. The minimum pass grade on this course is D marked on Pass or fail bases. Grades on this course are not calculated as part of Semester GPAs or grades.

7 - L3 students required to take the following two courses from the Academic Programme:

   - 0101025 Study Skills (3 C.H. per Wk.)

   - 0302100 Computers: Their Impacts & Uses (3 C.H. per Wk.).

All academic guidelines on, e.g., fees, pass/fail, GPA, accumulative averages, and etc.; apply to Academic courses taken by L3 Foundation Programme.

L3 Students are, also, allowed to take another course from the Academic Programme provided that it doesn’t exceed the total Study Load (18 C.H. per Wk.).
